Always been interested in relief maps. Lately I’ve wanted to purchase some 3D relief maps. The contours you can feel with your hand. Maybe even exaggerated relief maps. But it seems to have been popular historically but not so much nowadays.

Who’s still actively creating 3D relief maps? Is this now just the domain of 3D printing?

Along the same lines a 3D relief globe would be amazing.

Where’s the right place to buy? Are they all ridiculously expensive? Or is there a supplier who does reasonable prices for basically educational maps?

    hi,

not exactly what you asked for, but if you are also interested in cities, you might want to consider Cityframes

They are expensive, but they do look quite cool!

I don’t know, if this is helpful for you, because it depends on where you live.

This is a German company and they are mostly focused on Europe both with respect to the maps available and to the countries available for shipping.

I wish I could help you, which I can’t, but it’s funny that you bring that up because I just saw a guy bring in an antique but very well-done 3D relief map of the U.S. made in the 1800s on Antiques Road Show a couple of days ago. Painted and carved wood. Very beautiful. Good luck in your search. That sounds like a wonderful thing to display in your home. We have a bunch of reproductions of antiquated 2D maps on our walls, so I definitely see the appeal.

As they are rare, expensive, and most often not of the place you’d like to have, have you considered doing them on your own? Height data availability should not be a problem, and 3D-printing is not a miracle tech, either.

Yeah that’s probably the best option. I haven’t dipped my toes in 3D printing at all yet. It’s kind of daunting
