One thing that stands out to me is how often I see people criticising others for not using their setups “correctly” or well enough. “You can do this on a laptop.” etc. Ofc. I enjoy the fun and sarcastic “Behold my 800w Plex machine” posts and comments, but the ones I’m talking about aren’t coming from that angle.

They come from elitism and looking down on others who aren’t as knowledgeable or not as ambitious (yet). I think we all have this in a way and I must admit that a personal trigger I have is the fully patched up patch panels that go nowhere. But then I try to remember that that person clearly cares about that aesthetic and I would be lying if I didn’t find Ubiquity on my radar because “Oh, that looks nice…”

I think some of you are missing a part of what appeals to many people here. Let me compare it to classic cars…

Your ‘68 Dodge Charger isn’t efficient (d’uh) or anywhere as quick as you’d expect from the engine specs. A modern hot hatch will out accelerate, out corner and out brake it. Probably neither of their owners will ever use the cars to full potential anyway, but which one will bring the guy who’s always wanted a big, dumb muscle car more joy?

Many people have a big rack simply because it gives them joy. The potential of it and the power of yesteryear… “88 threads!? In my home!?” and “A terabyte of RAM, can you believe it, honey?” “Sure Harold, that does sounds like a lot of rams.”

I always loved hardware, so I can absolutely relate that. I have more classic game consoles and controller than physical games. I’m not even really a gamer! But I love all the hardware I wanted as a kid. I don’t need 128 lanes of Epyc goodness, but I kind of want it anyway. Thinking about it makes the hair on my arms stand up even though I’m not anywhere near doing the stuff many people here are capable of in software and management of systems

So yea, whether you’re a guy with a fast and efficient race car or a guy with a heavy muscle car that is kind of okay in a straight line, we all love cars, right? Same should be the idea in here imo
