I argue mostly everyone here never had a real banana. No, the ones in the stores aren’t the original flavor.
Well, the one in the stores are real bananas. They aren’t Gros Michel bananas, but that’s because Gros Michel went extinct before I was born (and I’m not exactly young anymore.) We might lose the Cavendish before I die.
Supposedly the “banana flavor” in candy is closer to a Gros Michel than to a Cavendish.
And “real” wild bananas are basically inedible.
Even last year when my tomatoes did poorly they still taste so much better than supermarket ones. Tbh outside a greenhouse I don’t think they really grow very well in the UK at all but I was given them so decided to try in the garden.
Main things I am growing is rosemary, thyme, sage, chives, mint, garlic and opium. But I kinda want to start guerrilla gardening some fruit bushes. Raspberries would be nice to plant around town.

I don’t get the hate this place gets. It’s been really interesting watching Lemmy’s growing pains over the last two-ish years and all the changes it has undergone. The whole concept of the Fediverse is fascinating to me and has been a genuine delight to explore.
I blame Tankies. They’re too aggressive with their “liberals this, liberals that” bullshit, which drives a way a lot of people cause that makes Lemmy look like a MAGA-infested shithole to anyone who doesn’t know what a Tankie this.
Hexbear and LemmyGrad’s bullshit almost made me quit Lemmy day one, until I learned how instances work and how to block them. I imagine that less-determined redditors will take one look at this place, see a liberal-bashing post, and then immediately fuck off.
I wish Tankies would just stay in their own god damn space, and keep their bootlicking politics to themselves. They’re ruining Lemmy.
Can confirm - I’m new here and when I see pieces of shit who’d be right at home amongst the people my grandfather killed in WWII (AKA nazis) it doesn’t make me more interested in sticking around. At this point IDGAF why they think they way they think, they can fuck off into the sun. At some point I’ll see whatever blocking thing there is and it will get better. Still an improvement over reddit.

I blame the anti-tankies. Like this is the only site i even see the termed even used and it looks like a weird hysteria for most. The community is already smal so it looks relay wired. Even this whinny attitude of blocking every one on this tiny space give real off vibes.
I am much more liberal with the block on lemmy than reddit simply because I know that I will probably have to interact with the person again if I don’t block them. I dont think I ever blocked more than maybe 10 people in the entirety of my time on reddit. on lemmy I block basically everyone I just don’t want to hear from.

The top comment on reddit is always a stupid fucking joke or pun. Not so on lemmy. That’s the biggest difference I notice when I go back to look at reddit. On popular posts the whole first 3 threads are inane bullshit.

My beef with Lemmy:
- It’s weighted towards politics
- Not a lot of niche sub critical mass yet (though this is not its fault at all)
- But holy moly, it’s a political purity test! Like, I think of myself as pretty socialist, way far off center, but I feel totally alone veering off certain topics or even acknowledging certain things! I’m (mostly) not getting banned, and I am not leaving, but still.

It’s expected. Right now, it is becoming a safe space for political dissidence. As sentiment pools and gathers mass, things tend to get towards the polar opposites and revolt breeds more revolt. Anything less than total agreement is viewed sideways.
Reddit has the same issue though.

For the moment, I just don’t engage in political discussion on Lemmy. It is way to extreme for me in general. It makes sense tho that those who don’t feel their opinions fit anywhere else (or get them banned etc.) gather in a place that allows for freer discussion, which I think is a good thing really.
And also just posting about niche music makes me happier than getting angry online so… That’s been a good motivation.

One of these is someone complaining about a ban from automod triggered by tons of downvotes on fresh account. That is, their takes were so shit that they were swept by tool meant for spambots
The other one possibly landed in ml, their impressions being formed by that place and doesn’t like very much that lemmy is a bit laggy (the horror)
And the replies explained that to them. It sounds like they were actually about even on upvotes to downvotes, but it was enough for an automod to act. They got unbanned after a real mod intervened. It is a frustrating experience, but one that’s going to vary by instance and community. They mentioned in an edit that they might give it another shot.
The other post did have some legitimate complaints about lack of content, most activity being tech bros, far-left politics, and shitpost, cumbersome ui, bad moderation, and elitist users. All of these I agree with even if I think they were exaggerated considerably. But they have all gotten better over time or can be much mitigated with some effort on the user’s part.

but also, the intense defense is Russia and China was pretty dumb. i get hating America. that’s fair and valid, but to do so while pretending that these other imperialistic super powers don’t also suck is pure denialism.
I get down voted from the .ml crowd for informing them their support of Trump, either direct or inadvertent, isn’t going to save Palestine its just going to get trans people killed and this gets me either blocked or banned. These people see an authoritarian and they can’t help but get a boner.
