I think were getting a little to quick to the trigger in shitting on AI. I dont see any problem in what I saw watching the Ted talk. I didn’t watch every minute of it but what I saw for what the article is calling AI slop seemed like viable use of AI to create fictional creatures.
From the perspective of a person from this very industry - the examples are at a level of a 10-yo. And the execution is absolutely terrible, even not conisdering it’s from ILM.
Might look like any other “CGI” to people from outside the industry, but it absolutely is slop.
Well it either shows how meaningless your job is or that a 10 year old could do your job if the avg viewer thinks everything he showed looked as good as any other graphics out there. Good luck with your whole pretentious artist shtick, hope it serves you well while youre serving bud lights and mixed drinks at whatever bar you be working at after AI replaces you!
Sorry to inform you that you’re evidently not an average viewer. More like a subpar viewer, a cretin if you will.
So you sitting there in your cozy armchair know better than somebody in the industry?
Come on, don’t be an asshole.
Yeah what do I know…

Well atleast you arent one of those creative shmucks who embraces AI, right?!..

Don’t forget to claim your state’s minimum for tips serving gin and tonics🍻
There it is.
This is ILM, though, considering what they’ve accomplished in the past with hands-on tools, for the current chief creative officer to embrace AI so wholeheartedly, and for the result to just be “animal crossed with animal”, it’s pretty disappointing
Seriously the AI generated creatures were weak bullshit. Maybe they mostly looked good, but none of them evoked anything actually alien, which was the supposed point.
Watched the whole thing. He had some valid points, especially where full permission from the talent is concerned. The “field guide” models were pretty uninspired, but they did a good job showcasing what is possible.
I have mixed feelings. Using AI responsibly is the ideal goal, but we have seen that this is largely not going to be the case both now and moving forward.
It’s crazy how it sometimes feels like it’s no longer enough to simply not like something - instead, one has to make actively hating it a part of their identity. People get conditioned to be triggered by certain keywords, and it doesn’t seem to matter what is said afterward or what the nuances of the particular case are - they’ve already decided how to react.
If what they are creating is like the thumbnail, they’re doing it wrong.
I’m more sick of hearing “slop slop slop slop slop” than I am of hearing about AI at this point. People sling slop around like it’s some sort of brave, heroic, destructive insult, leaving AI users in tears and shambles in its wake. Ironic considering a complaint against AI is that it regurgitates the same characteristic bit of content over and over again mindlessly. But even ChatGPT would have the writing skill to cycle in some other adjectives, my goodness.
I don’t think anyone using the term “slop” thinks it’s brave or leaving anyone else in tears and shambles. I’m fairly certain when folks say they’re tired of AI slop they literally mean they’re tired of AI slop.
You wouldn’t be calling it “slop” if you thought a human made it in photoshop, which means your judgement isn’t actually based on the quality of the image.
What’s the point of calling it “slop”, then? What is “slop” even supposed to mean if it’s not describing quality?

Anyone can write anything on UrbanDictionary. How often do you actually see that term being used?
Are you a native english speaker? Just curious.
Yeeees although I feel like I’m walking into a trap rn
