HP is in no way alone in doing this. This is an industry standard. Call centers are critically understaffed and under supplied on purpose. Call centers do not generate income, and the more customers that reach an agent, the more the call center ultimately costs to operate.
I guess I mean the method, not the specific app. Most keyboards have implemented some form of it and they all seem to work kinda the same.
Swype is the best method if don’t have individual key feedback IMO. I find it’s generally pretty good at figuring out what I’m trying to say, and in the odd case it doesn’t I’m usually spelling something wrong, or using a word I almost never use. And then, typing individual letters every once in a while isn’t the end of the world.

You have etched it. That, I am sorry to say, is permanent. If you have access to a furnace you could try refiring it, a few minutes at 1500 f would do it, if it can be done at all. You’ve basically turned a smooth glass layer in to a kind of sponge. You need to melt that outer surface again.
