My personal laptop is a Dell XPS 13 and while I like it for various reasons, it has had plenty of problems with the built-in mic and video (mostly the mic). So it very well could be that.

We have like 250, mostly remote and on Slack all the time. There’s the occasional hiccup here and there, but generally it’s pretty seamless.

I’ve personally never had an issue with Slack, mic/video included. My connection has always been solid, though. Never tried on a shit connection.

• Nearest chain supermarket/big supermarket (they are often one in the same here): Target @ 1.5 miles/2.4km
• Bus stop: 1.3 miles/2.1km
• Nearest park: 0.6 miles/965m
• Nearest public library: 3.5 miles/5.6km
• Nearest train station: 9.1 miles/14.6km (we don’t really use trains much at all in the US, though)

It’s speed, but it’s also flow and a continuous stream of thought. If all your editing is being done with muscle memory and minimal thought, you can continue thinking about the problem at hand rather than interrupting your thoughts process to fumble through some context menu to make a change.

The negative impact a lot of screen time has on kids is very well documented. Basically, even educational shows do basically nothing for young kids. It’s passive and doesn’t help development in any way. Kids benefit a lot more from active exploration, play, and socialization.

Same story for Nebraska. Most of the population lives in Omaha or Lincoln which both lean blue, but Republicans gerrymandered the fuck out of our districts so we’re a red state. And it matters a lot more here since we’re one of two states that split our electoral college votes by congressional district. Like recently Lincoln overwhelmingly voted for a Democrat for our district in a special election, but Republicans naturally redrew the fucking maps to include counties that are fucking north of Omaha (like 120 miles away). Yeah. Anduril has tried to hire me multiple times as well as well as a number of people I know (their software is written in Haskell, which is a somewhat niche skill set).

Thank God someone else said it. I was constantly in an existential battle with IT at my last job when they were constantly forcing updates, many of which did actually break systems we rely on because Apple loves introducing breaking changes in OS updates (like completely fucking up how dynamic libraries work).

Updates should be vetted. It’s a pain in the ass to do because companies never provide an easy way to rollback, but this really should be standard practice.

Omaha is a lot less left-leaning in my experience. It’s very purple. Lincoln is solidly blue.

I just recently purchased a house in Lincoln. Just quickly looking on Zillow for Omaha and home prices look to be very similar to what I was seeing here in Lincoln. Property taxes in Omaha are also a fair bit higher than Lincoln.

There’s other stuff too, like lower crime rate in Lincoln, better/more parks, LPS being generally a lot better than OPS, etc.

I guess it ultimately depends on what you’re after. If you want something more big city, then Omaha obviously has Lincoln beat. But for a more relaxed pace of life and for raising a family, Lincoln is where it’s at.

There are a number of blue cities in the Midwest. What’s the lowest temp you want? I live in Lincoln, Nebraska and it’s pretty great: nice weather most of the year, low cost of living, blue city, tons of parks. Only downside is dealing with red state bullshit from the state government.

You are only allowed to participate in society if you take the necessary steps that you are morally and ethically obligated to do in order to protect it from preventable, transmissible disease. We had eradicated polio until stupid motherfuckers like yourself decided that it would be a good idea to forgo the standard polio vaccine schedule that we’ve had for decades. Now, we saw the first case in 30 years in 2022 because someone selfishly thought that their personal beliefs were more important than the health and livelihood of everyone else.

Never do certifications for software engineering. The only certifications worth a damn are security certs and networking certs. If I saw a programming-related certification on a resume, I would completely ignore it since the only thing it tells me is that you paid some money to get a cert.

While I’m not a fan of Java, it’s most certainly not a dying language and you will be able to easily find employment into perpetuity. If I had to pick, I’d personally choose Java over .NET purely to avoid being trapped in Microsoft-land, especially with all of the bullshit they’ve been up to lately.
