Feels like they promote lemmy the same way microsoft promotes linux
Basically yes. The alternatives passively become better simply because of the mainstream option becoming worse over time. I think it’s still going too slowly in general but I’m not complaining, better slow than not at all.
Better slow than too fast too. Lemmy feels like a nice fairly small community. I’m not sure that’ll continue once it’s the size of Reddit. We’ll get more content and niche communities will be better served though, so there’s pros and cons.
Once you hit a certain size you become a tempting target for bots, spammers and trolls. Managing that is going to be a challenge.
i think the most realistic way will be to examine unusual patterns in the IP addresses used for the accounts.
That’s benefit of being built out of local communities!
There’s instances where users only interact with each other and not the larger Fediverse/lemmyverse.
Not quite… It’s easiest to game on Windows still. I’d love to move to Linux, though. But, alas, this year is not your year still. Crucify me if you wish, but this is the truth. So say a simple gamer that knows more than you do if you’re peddling Linux as the best option in early 2025.
I’ve switched to main linux last week, for now with a windows dualboot for games that have issues. Honestly a good option if you just don’t like windows or where it’s heading. Depending on what you play going 100% linux isn’t viable though (but also if you’re not playing any multiplayer games it is).
Rebooting is so fast these days that switching OS isn’t a big problem, and I’m surprised just how well proton is working. I’ve somehow had more problems with the EA launcher trying to play nfs unbound on windows than on linux (it just worked with no issues, on windows it wouldn’t launch if I don’t close the ea launcher first).
What have you been trying to run? I am honestly baffled at the linux gaming possibilities, even outside of Steam. I mean even Star Citizen “runs” on linux. (lol)
That depends on what games you play. The steamdeck proves that it’s possible to game on Linux.
Watch this: Luigi is a hero
Just made an account here ten minutes ago. The format feels weird but it’s nice to be able to continue talking like sensible people without getting banned for it. Feels good, man.
Check out lemmyapps.com for different apps and webUIs. There is even sm old reddit style clone like old.lemmy.world for example.
Happy you could join! You’ll find that not only are bans much more reasonable, but conversations are frequently downright pleasant. Aditionally, there are communities built just for calling out mods that abuse power or are heavily biased. The system here is working much better from a user perspective.
I like it when people argue, but it’s like constructive arguments where both are making good points
I will say, DO NOT use Sync or Boost, both are abandoned. Voyager is FOSS and adapts to updates.
Damn was using Sync
I’ve been using using Sync since it was Sync for Reddit and the developer is known for flurries of updates followed by radio silence. So it’s not unusual for him. It is closed source so if he ever disappears forever it will probably eventually break. But it’s a great app.
I’ve read that elsewhere too, but he never took over a year up update. I think this was too much work for not enough pay.
Welcome!
If you used to use the Apollo app for Reddit then I strongly recommend Transit. It looks and feels a lot like Apollo, but for Lemmy.
And for former Relay users, Summit will feel pretty familiar.
Infinity -> Eternity
If it’s any help, I use the sync app on android. I also used sync for reddit prior to the API thing which finally made me leave, so my experience is pretty much the same in terms of format. I agree it can feel weird in a browser but there’s a bunch of good mobile apps that might feel more familiar.
Just FYI the dev abandoned the app and core features still break when the new instance updates take place. Not to mention:
Tap for spoiler
They never fixed their spoiler markdowns.
Ah, didn’t realise it had been abandoned. Shame, I’ve been using it a while, and I used the reddit version up until the API thing. I guess I can understand the dev becoming frustrated with a lot of work for a small audience.
No algorithm!
.world mods would be very upset if we didn’t bully them into submission 😔
Having not been using this place as regularly for the last couple of weeks, it definitely looks like there’s more upvotes on posts now in general compared to when I started up here about two months ago. Even just before this latest Reddit fuck up, it looks a lot to me like there’s been a steady influx lately. Like suddenly noticing that the grass has got longer.
When I made my Lemmy account (the day reddit put a paywall on the API) most posts didn’t even have comments (sorting by hot/popular). And it would be common to run out of new posts after a bit of scrolling. Now it looks about the same level of activity as reddit 10-something years ago.
I just came over from Reddit. I stepped back after the API debacle but didn’t switch to Lemmy until this week when they threatened me for upvoting something “violent” (honestly, no idea what it could have been).
Anyway, I want to agree with your sentiment. Remember Reddit before they started messing with the upvotes? Top posts would have 1k-2k upvotes and outstanding insanely popular posts would break like 7k.
On Lemmy, I scan the comments and I easily can see real people talking. I usually have to scan a long time on Reddit to find real people and not bots recycling comments. It makes me wonder how many real humans are commenting over there.
Glad there’s humans here.
It feels good not seeing repeated comments, everyones actually reading before saying stuff
Oh yeah, I’ve only been on Lemmy a few months but I’ve noticed it. I was one baby face emoji (is that just a Voyager thing?) in a sea of old accounts, but recently I’ve been seeing more and more of those baby emojis
I think it is just a Voyager thing, on Thunder I see a pink name & cake if a user joined today
We’re witnessing the second reddit wave now, just like we always knew it would come eventually when reddit crossed another enshitification threshold.
Welcome all!
I’m pretty sure my account ban is coming, the fact it isn’t banned already is likely an oversight of the fascist running the place.
Most of my accounts are banned or suspended now.
Maybe it’s the fact I have only one? There are a couples places that would be a lot quieter if I stopped commenting and I’m guessing they don’t really want to bite the many hands that feed. Once comments die it’s just a graveyard of links.
I don’t think it’s based on your contributions. My main account had over 600k comment karma when it was banned.
They are purging anti-corporate perspectives and anti-genocide perspectives, this is becoming clear. They now have a social credit system where they track accounts that upvote posts which are later removed.
They probably want to make the AI training data a bit more pro corporate and right wing.
I said one thing bad about trump saying more h1b visas (they are bad for americans (harder for us to get jobs that give experience) and they dont contribute to the economy they actively take money out and send it home, its not the best or the brightest like they claim) Then temp banned for 3 days, and after that banned once a week for a few days til like 2 months later I got banned. The worst ban was abusing reports, I reported some fd up shit like ppl planning group suicides, doubt they even looked or cared, just banned me for reporting and increased it for complaining.
I promise you if someone plans to off themselves with you they are manipulating you and have no intention of doing it, felt like watching serial killers in action
That’s some heavy shit. Incitement to suicide is a serious offence in many countries.
Happy to be here… I think. Doesn’t seem too weird so far.
Enshitification complete!
We’re hereeeee! Also Luigi is a national treasure.
Banned for supporting Super Mario characters.
Luigi!
Reddit full bore banned me for saying “I should have a legal right to punch nazis” and declined my appeal.
Reddit is unironically nazi aligned and that’s not a joke it’s terrifying.
I haven’t been full banned yet but have grown tired of the amazing levels of stupidity. I caught a temp ban for incivility for writing “Your mother should have gone through with her Planned Parenthood appointment.”
I find that answer amazing and I will adopt it from now on to all the orange guy followers, cheers
Go forth with my blessings.
Not very civil of you dear…
Tbh you can catch bans for that here but beauty of fediverse is that power tripping mods have limited ability to ban you fedi wide so freedom enjoyer’s just go do their discourse on other sub’s and servers
To be fair, that’s kinda deserved. You could experience the same here.
There are plenty of other reasons to hate on Reddit, but acting in a fairly civil manner should be expected.
Glad to have you here though! 😊
Banning people who aren’t “safe spacey enough” is fucking stupid.
People can be abrasive. People can be mean. People will absolutely take your shit if you let them.
Hiding from them in a bubble doesn’t make them disappear (and shockingly sometimes they have points to make).
Hmm…
So your argument is that we potentially lose valuable insight?
I agree in principle, but it is hard to balance.
Because without a certain amount of civility we potentially lose the voice of minorities and oppressed groups of people.
In a free democratic country you of course should be legally allowed to be abrasive and say mean hurtful things.
How would you balance/solve this dilemma on a social network? The same way as the law?
I am a bit torn here
Reddit is aligned with the corporate overlords of the US, which are nazi aligned.
to the sword with both of them
But… but… Won’t someone think of the poor innocent nazis???
(I got a warning for pretty much the same reason and decided not to hang around until I got a full ban.)
What was the post, though?
Anyone know? Super curious.
Went to find the removed post. The comments are not locked, lol. So everyone is discussing Reddit censorship and how they are upvoting it after it was removed.
Anyway, someone in the comments said this: “Musk doing a Hitler salute with a target on his head. Text “Make Nazis dead again” Very nice sticker”
Funny enough. I just joined like 10 minutes ago. As someone whose been on reddit since 2008! I’ve finally had enough when my 15 year old account started getting permabanned just for understanding why people like Luigi exist. And getting banned all over because of one comment. Then I saw another post this morning talking about alternatives to reddit and how someone else started getting banned for just about the same reasons. Then I and came across this platform. And it seems very promising at first glance. I’m m very hopeful it can make its way. Reminds me of the older days of early Internet.
I’ve been here for 12d now and feddit hasn’t lost it’s charm. That feeling of how the internet was before the big companies is so refreshing.
Couldn’t agree more. I’m officially onboard with this platform. Still trying to figure out how it all works. But it’s great
I got a warning for upvoting too much violent content. I know it’s bullshit. I contributed regarding economics but nothing violent.
Done with Reddit.
Never got my wrist slapped. But enforcing votes is beyond the pale.
Dipped my toes into lemmy during the last exodus (2023?) but I’m done posting to reddit forever now.
Delete account wipe your posts and replace with links to lemmy stuff
Use the add on Nuke Reddit History. They banned a few of my old accounts after I used it. They hate it.
Yep, that’s why I’m here now. If I ever use my Reddit account I just refuse to upvote anything at all
Not the whole site but I got banned from World News a month or so ago for making a Luigi related Mario Brothers joke.
Such a joke. I am not even remotely a small time Reddit user either, been there for like 15 years and probably have over a million Karma across 3-4 accounts.
Same here, but the bots don’t even tell you the “wrongthink” post that you upvoted so you have no idea how to avoid upvotes that will flag your account with a warning/ban. It’s fucking psychotic on reddit now. Like watching the Titanic sink at this point.
deleted by creator
Mods remove a post from /r/worldnews about Musk pushing for the US to leave NATO because it’s “not the appropriate subreddit”…? Excuse me, what the fuck???
Mod decisions always baffled me, both on Reddit and Lemmy. We aren’t immune to it.
But here it’s a lot easier to set up a new home.
[email protected] is still very popular but I saw the writing on the wall and jumped to make an alt [email protected] because people had gripes with the Midwest admin and I wanted to prevent an inevitable Lemmy.world alternative from appearing.
And now we happily co-exist. Theirs tends to focus more on the political while I like to also post the more mundane, slice-of-life, articles
Absolutely. I’m here after a decade+ over there.
I’ve been here since they killed third-party apps. I regret nothing, this place is my home now.
I still go sometimes, but I use the RDX app and don’t contribute
Welcome in from the cold. We have hot cocoa and blankets.
Wait a minute, this hot cocoa cup is just full of beans
And lots of gay
It’s why I’m here. 12 year member, nearly a million in karma, perma-banned for repeating a statement I’d made many times in the past with no repercussions. The first time I repeated it after HitlerPig stole the election, I was fully banned.
It’s happening because Ohanion wants to buy TikTok, and he knows HitlerPig will be personally making the decision, based on who smooched his ass the most, and who paid the biggest bribe. So as a show of good faith, he’s volunteering to make Reddit a member of the Conservative Propaganda Machine.
I hope Reddit goes the way of Digg.
Same here,
The sweet irony of this is that digg.com is coming back. I’m on the early subscription list for when they finally release it. There’s going to be a point in time where reddit is just 80% bots talking to each other, I bet.
Permabanned after nearly 12 years. Forgive me for hating Nazi’s. I’d made the statement fuck all Nazi’s but six several times but this time was this time I got automod flagged. They are pretty much flagging the word Nazi regardless of context or overall statements made. The same goes for the word Luigi. Also, Karma is basically useless considering downvoting too much can also lead to a ban. It is pretty ridiculous. I’d never been banned once for any reason except for the last 6 months where I’ve been sub banned or gotten 3-7 day bans several times for making points about the sorry state of affairs in America lately. Forgive me for not bowing to kiss the fascist MAGA ring. Reddit has really put profits over people this time with these stupid rules and no real care in reading appeals or looking at context during moderation. It is all for their bottom line and oligarch investors now.
Interesting. My 10 year old account also got perma banned for telling someone defending the third Nazi salute to “go to hell”.
Apparently I should have told them to “go fuck themselves”. But telling them to “go to hell” was inciting violence or whatever.
I got mine for saying we needed to cyberbully Elon Musk to suicide. A little edgy maybe, but old Reddit wouldn’t have batted an eye.
Yeah, I’ve said fuck all Nazis but six or kill all Nazis but six a hundred times on there, but this time was a bridge too far apparently. I really don’t care if they think it is violent. They’ll get theirs eventually I guess if history is a cyclical as it seems. Just gonna keep on trucking and spreading the word when I can, but it sure as shit ain’t going to be on Reddit. I think I’m getting too old, grizzled, and cynical for any form of social media anymore anyways. It’s all just so… fake. Reddit was the last bastion for me. I probably won’t be that prolific on here, but we’ll see.
you can get flagged or astroturfed for calling out people trying to sanewash nazis, usually its the statement"You should not call everyone a nazi you disagree with" type of post.
Yep. The whataboutism and trying to play the both sides are wrong shit is so old. I think it is fair to say that a large portion of the Democratic party are gutless centrist DINO’s, can’t get their point across, can’t get a coalition going, and have no real power or momentum right now, but to try and argue that they are as bad as the conservatives is complete nonsense. Certainly, no party is perfect but to even try to say they are equivalent is folly of the highest order. Many in the republican party are fascists and I’m sick of people pretending that they aren’t. Nuanced conversation is lost on the bots, AI slop, and the rest of the idiots on Reddit.
All are welcome and check this out: Cisgender
Truely amazingCisgendered Nazis should be punched in the face! To be fair, all Nazis deserve a violent rebuttal. See? Not banned.
Hello folks! Found out I was banned this morning and spent all day trying to figure out an alternative. All for liking a post that said Trump raped a girl. Oh well. He did rape a girl so wtf?
Thats wrongthink. Double plus ungood.
Info: was the article pro or con re: Trump’s child rape? You would likely not have been banned by reddit had it been pro Trump’s child rape.
Same here! My second 7-day site-wide suspension, I’m guessing ban next. I got flagged with warnings for upvoting something related to Luigi as “violating the rules by upvoting hate posts.” It’s like fucking 1984 over there now.
seems the added increase “luigi” and increase the amount of ban/purges going on. i was banned before they labeled LUIGI as a dirty word. i think its going to get worst and worst til theres only MSM only content on the site(that you can comment on)
That seems to be the general direction at this point. reminds me of r/HailCorporate, calling out posts that are really advertisements but don’t explicitly tell you they are.
I came from reddit due to overt censorship, so yeah. I hope this place gets more populated, reddit definitely has the userbase advantage for now.
I’ve been here for a while now. The userbase can be seen as an advantage, but it’s also a negative. Things move so fast in reddit and everyone is just passing by each other. You can have actual conversations here though. It feels more communal.
I want more users so niche communities can thrive, but I’m also worried about it becoming too much like Reddit has been for a while now.
Lemmy is not commercial, so the more fundamental problem will be battling bots, hosting, legal issues, and attracting users from sites that burn cash on advertising and entrapment, probably.
The community could get toxic, but it’s not going to be stoked from the top, and it’s more escapable.
Welcome in from the cold. We have hot cocoa and blankets.
Aren’t we getting fancy! When I moved over after the api changes all we had was potatoes. Lemmy is definitely improving with each new wave.
Also beans. Can we bring back the beans, you know, for the newbies?
You must have been on a fancy server, where I was it was only potatoes.
