    I braise a whole bag of onions and use it the base for a big pot of Turkish-ish red lentil soup.

    I have a very well stocked spice cupboard though and with all the herbs and spices I use in this dish, it probably wouldn’t work out as cheap if you had to buy them alongside the onions and lentils, which together only cost about £3 tops for a kilo or more of each.
