Found my way back to Lemy today as well for something similar. I’ve noticed just in the past few days the comment threads on even mundane threads have gotten really weird. It could be a post about a picture of a hummingbird and it would devolve into strange politics. Weird pro CCP and North Korea stuff lately too. It’s weird.

The difference between comments/votes and supposed “views” made it seem like the later was inflated.
Even more obvious was when something got posted at odd hours of the night in a local community. The view count would take off shortly after, while the comments and votes would only show up around when people wake up.
I think you severely underestimate the amount of people who just browse and don’t interact with stuff.
Freedom of speech doesn’t oblige anybody to publish anything on their own website that they don’t want to, any more than they’re required to say certain things if they’re shouting on a street corner. “But it’s not the same thing, a website has a much larger reach!” It doesn’t matter. Website operators get to publish what they want.

I’ll give you a specific example: I posted this on r/ShowerThoughts: “Incest is like pissing in your gene pool”. I think it’s pretty good, but mods deleted my post because it goes against community guidelines. If I got into an argument with the mods and got banned from r/ShowerThoughts, I wouldn’t be going around crying about “freedom of speech”, because it’s dumb, and communities have rules.

- Normalizing nazi shit goes against most communities guidelines, somewhere around the general, “don’t post hateful stuff” requirements
- If communities can have their own rules, they are free to ban people for hateful shit.

Freedom of speech does not cover lies. It doesn’t mean lies are illegal - it only means they are NOT protected under the freedom of speech - which means they can be banned or made illegal if individual states decides to do so.
Furthermore there is plethora of situations in which lies are illegal in multiple countries. As a matter of example, in the UK lying when you are selling something is called “fraudulent misrepresentation” and it is a criminal offence.

They will not create their own instance, they will come to ours. And we don’t have neither computing power to support all of them, nor enough skilled moderators to respond to all that, not enough of a routine and etiquette to quickly understand whom to kill and who is there legit.
I can see it all evolving over time, but I am really not optimistic about the scenario of Lemmy trying to accommodate to even a 100k people overnight. And reddit is much bigger than that.
